Dim auroras

Last night I was chasing northern lights at Kurjenrahka national park. According to forecasts there might be a slight chance to see auroras even in South-Western Finland.

And yes, there were auroras. Not bright, but auroras anyway. Nice additions were bright moon and howling tawny owls!

Gear: E-M1X + Panasonic Leica 12/1.4. Manual focusing, 6 sec, f/1.4, ISO 1600.

Northern lights

Finally got some northern lights pics before clouds covered the sky. This time there were also very nice red colored lights, very beautiful.

These pics were shot during the night Oct. 23rd/24th.

Gear: E-M1 Mark III + Panasonic Leica Summilux 12/1.4. Detailed specs are shown with each pic.

Tips for focusing in the dark

Okay, this was the only night during this northern lights activity period when I had a chance to try some great northern light pics.

The sky was almost clear, no wind, very good weather conditions. And no northern lights. This is the way it usually goes in Southern Finland.

Anyway, here are some tips for focusing in the dark using Olympus gear:

Turn Live View Boost on. If you want to use AF, the use Starry Sky AF. If you want to focus manually, use PreMF focused to 999,9 meters or use magnifying view. That is pretty much it, works fine.

Gear: E-M1 Mark III with Panasonic Leica 12/1.4.

Hike in Muotkatunturi Wilderness

I the beginning of September I did a few day’s hike in Muotkatunturi Wilderness area. Very peaceful, all kinds of weather and I didn’t see any other people during the hike. Unfortunately only one evening was half clear, so I didn’t got any decent nigh sky pics.

Gear:

I had E-M1 Mark III with M-Zuiko 12-100/4 Pro attached to backpack straps ready to shoot all the time. Weather sealing of this gear is so good that it is possible to keep the gear outside your backpack all the time, even in a heavy rain. A had also M.Zuiko 60/2.8 Macro for close ups and Panasonic Leica Summilux 12/1.4 for night shots. Starry Sky AF works fine also with the Panasonic lens. For night shots I had also an old but lightweight Slik Sprint Mini GM tripod.

With some close up pics I used focus stacking, which is very easy with Olympus gear.
